Located in the historic Misasa Onsen area of Tottori Prefecture, the Hanayu Matsuri is a significant annual event held to celebrate the birth of Buddha and to pray for a bountiful harvest and business prosperity. The absolute highlight of this festival is the "Jinsho," a massive rope-pulling ceremony designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Using wisteria vines harvested from the mountains, a colossal rope approximately 80 meters long and weighing about 2 tons is braided together. This ritual serves as a profound symbol of community unity and strength.
The most spectacular moment is undoubtedly the Jinsho tug-of-war. Watching the crowds divided into East and West teams pull the massive wisteria rope with immense strength is a truly heroic and awe-inspiring sight. Local legend says that a victory for the East brings a great harvest, while a victory for the West brings business prosperity. The tension and heat of the competition create an atmosphere you can only experience during this specific time of year. Additionally, the festival period features various cultural events, including ceremonies at Misasa Shrine, the Chigo procession through the hot spring streets, and children's portable shrine parades.
