The Nakazaike Hanamai Festival is a traditional folk performance passed down through the Nakazaike district of Toei Town, Aichi Prefecture, boasting a history of over 700 years. Designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, this event is a vital symbol of the region's deep-rooted history and culture. Despite the small population, the festival is meticulously preserved through strong community bonds and support from surrounding areas, offering a profound look into the passion of local traditions.
The greatest allure of this festival lies in its overwhelming intensity. The vigorous movements of the 'Sakaki-oni' (demon dance) and the soul-stirring, powerful beats of the 'Yu-bayashi' music will instantly transport you into an extraordinary, otherworldly atmosphere. Parking space is extremely limited on the day of the event. If you are traveling by car, we highly recommend carpooling with others to minimize the impact on local space.
This festival is a precious tradition carefully maintained by the local community. While there is no formal entrance fee, we kindly ask for a voluntary contribution known as 'Hanamai' to support the festival's operations, the training of successors, and the maintenance of ritual tools. Contributions can be made at the 'Kaisho' (meeting hall) on-site, where local tokens of appreciation are often prepared.
Admission is free; however, a voluntary contribution (Hanamai) of approximately 3,000 JPY per person is requested to support the festival's preservation. Contributions are accepted at the 'Kaisho' on-site. Please check the official website for further details.
No advanced reservations are required. However, as the event takes place outdoors at night during winter, please ensure you wear heavy, warm clothing to protect against the cold. Due to limited parking, using public transportation or carpooling is strongly encouraged.
