Hanamatsuri (Kamikurogawa District) is a traditional Kagura ritual passed down through generations in the Kamikurogawa area of Toyone Village, Aichi Prefecture. This sacred event takes off place at the historic Kumano Shrine, a site of immense cultural value housing prefectural-designated cultural assets. The powerful, rhythmic performances of the local tradition will captivate all who attend.
The main attraction is the dynamic Kagura dance, performed by dancers wearing striking red costumes and fearsome Oni (demon) masks. The ritual, often accompanied by rising steam and a sense of ancient mystery, offers a truly otherworldly experience. While the winter festival is the primary event, the area also offers beautiful seasonal changes, such as cherry blossom illuminations in spring, making the historic shrine a beautiful space to experience Japanese spirituality throughout the year.
This event takes place from 5:00 PM on January 3rd until approximately 10:00 AM on January 4th. The traditional rituals and dances are performed during the night and early morning hours. We recommend staying to witness the full progression of these solemn performances.

This is a cherished local tradition. Visitors are asked to respect the local customs and observe the rituals quietly. As the event occurs in early January, temperatures will be extremely low. Please dress warmly for the winter cold. While basic facilities are available, please be prepared for limited amenities.
