The Hamasaki Gion Festival (Hamasaki Gion Yamakata) is a historic ritual dedicated to Suwa Shrine in Hamasaki, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. The tradition traces back to 1753, when local leaders, inspired by the grandeur of Kyoto's Gion festivals and the energy of Hakata Gion Yamakata, established this event to pray for bountiful harvests and prosperous business. The festival features three massive floats, known as Yamakata, which stand approximately 15m tall and weigh about 5t. These giants parade through the town accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of flutes, drums, and shamisen.
The greatest draw is the sheer scale of the spectacle. Watching the 15m-tall floats dominate the streetscape is a breathtaking sight. A true highlight is the 'O-magiri'—the dramatic moment when the floats rotate near the shrine or local intersections—and the enchanting sight of the floats illuminated by lanterns at night. The unique 'Hamasaki-style' float structure and the soulful melodies of the traditional music provide a deep sense of Japanese aesthetic beauty and cultural heritage.
To avoid the rainy season, the festival is typically held on the Saturday and Sunday immediately following 'Marine Day' in July.
