Goshinkosai is a highly significant ritual held at Usa Jingu Shrine in Usa City, Oita Prefecture, as part of the Natsukoshi Oiwai (Summer Grand Festival). This tradition has deep historical roots, with records dating back to the Heian period. The sight of the three sacred deities riding in their respective divine palanquins (Mikoshi) as they travel from the Upper Shrine to the Lower Shrine is truly breathtaking.
The greatest charm of this festival is the magnificent procession. You will see Shinto priests and attendants dressed in exquisite historical costumes, accompanied by young musicians playing traditional music alongside the three divine palrans. The movement of the 'Oshizuri' (descending from the Upper Shrine) and the 'Oagari' (ascending to the Upper Shrine) creates a deeply sacred atmosphere.
On August 1st, you can witness the 'Yabusame' (traditional horseback archery) ritual at the Oboyama approach, performed according to the strict traditions of the Ogasawara school. This is a rare chance to see classical martial arts up close. Furthermore, on the night of August 2nd, the 'Yakuyoke Fireworks Display' will light up the sky, providing a brilliant conclusion to the sacred festivities. The combination of solemn ritual and vibrant fireworks makes Goshinkosai a truly unforgettable experience.
The festival takes place over three days from July 31st to August 2nd.
The event is held at and around the premises of Usa Jingu Shrine in Usa City, Oita.
Goshinkosai is not just an event, but a sacred ritual preceded by strict purification rites by the priests. When observing the historical costumes and rituals, please maintain a respectful and quiet demeanor to honor the sanctity of the site. Pay close attention to the movement of the divine palanquins during the 'Oshizuri' and 'Oagari' segments.
As this event is held in mid-summer, we highly recommend bringing hats, plenty of water, and wearing breathable clothing to prevent heatstroke. For the Yabusame and fireworks, comfortable clothing is also advised. Please check the official website for details regarding any necessary reservations or specific local payment methods.
