Gifu Matsuri is a grand collective celebration held at several historic shrines, including Inaba Shrine, Kanai Shrine, and Kashimori Shrine, all within Gifu City. The absolute highlight is the sight of four magnificent, designated cultural property floats (Hiruko-sha, Atake-guruma, Seiei-sha, and Odori-sha) and the powerful, rhythmic movement of the Mikoshi portable shrines. A must-see is the "Yatai Karakuri"—the traditional mechanical puppet performances atop the floats. Watch as figures like Benkei and Togashi come to life on the Atake-guruma, or the mythical sea and mountain deities on the Seiei-sha, showcasing exquisite traditional craftsmanship. As night falls during the Inaba Shrine Yoimiya, the atmosphere becomes truly magical with fireworks lighting up the sky alongside the festival festivities.
The main ceremonial day for Gifu Matsuri is April 5th every year. Additionally, the Shinkosai, Inaba Shrine Yoimiya, the Gifu Matsuri Mikoshi Parade, and the Dousan Matsuri are typically held on the first Saturday of April.
