The Genji Ayame Festival is a historic early summer tradition in Izu no Kuni, Shizuoka, continuing since 1934. The festival originated to honor the spirit of Ayame-gozen (also known as Shobu-gozen), the wife of the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yorimasa, who was said to have lived in the Kona area of Izu Nagaoka. Renowned as a woman of unparalleled beauty, her historical legacy brings a sense of elegance and vitality to the Izu Nagaoka hot spring town.

The festival offers a diverse program where historical atmosphere meets modern festivities.
*Illuminations & Scenery**: During the festival, beautiful light-ups decorate the area from Kona Momiji Park to Genji Mountain and Yurarakku Park. The illuminated night scenery is incredibly photogenic.
*Traditional Rituals & Dance**: On July 5th, the Ayame-gozen Memorial Service is held. You can experience deeply rooted local traditions, such as the ceremonial dances performed by the Izu Nagaoka Mibanzu.
*Food Stalls & Stage Events**: The streets of the hot spring district and the parks are lined with many food stalls (yatai) offering local delicacies. Stage events for all ages, from children to adults, are also held.
*Mikoshi Parade**: As a climax of the festival, a portable shrine (mikoshi) is carried through the Onsen-jo Deai-dori street, energizing the entire town.

The 2025 festival will take place over two days: July 5 (Sat) and July 6 (Sun).

The event is spread across several areas around the Izu Nagaoka Onsen district.
*Main Venues**: Ayame-gozen Plaza, Kona Momiji Park, Yurarakku Park, Genji Mountain Park, and Onsen-jo Deai-dori Street.
*Train & Bus**: Approximately a 15-minute walk from Izu Nagaoka Station (Izuhakone Railway). Alternatively, take the Izuhakone Bus and get off at "Nagaoka Sogo Kaikan-mae."
*Car**: Approximately 7km from the Kannami Tsukamoto IC on the Izu Jukan Expressway.
Tips for Visitors
*Photography**: The illuminated landscapes and traditional dances are stunning. We recommend using a wide-angle lens on your smartphone to capture the full scale of the scenery.
*Crowds & Traffic**: During the festival, the Onsen-jo Deai-dori street becomes a pedestrian-only zone (17:30–21:00).
*Parking**: There is no dedicated parking for the festival. We highly recommend using public transportation.
What to Bring & Etiquette
*Clothing**: As this is a summer event, please wear breathable, light clothing. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for outdoor movement at night.
*Payment**: Most food stalls expect cash. It is helpful to prepare small change or 1,000 yen notes for smooth transactions.
