The Gangara Fire Festival is a traditional event held every August 24th in Ikeda City, Osaka. With a history dating back to 1644 (Edo period), the festival is held to pray for protection against fire and for the safety of families. In 2010, it was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Osaka Prefecture. This deeply rooted community event involves receiving sacred fire from Atago Shrine on Mt. Satsuki, lighting the character 'Dai' (Great) on the mountainside, and parading massive torches through the streets.
The absolute highlight is the parade of the 'O-taimochi' (Great Torches). Watching these massive torches, standing about 4 meters tall and weighing approximately 100 kilograms, as they march through the streets scattering sparks, is a breathtaking spectacle. Additionally, the 'Dai' character fire glowing on the slopes of Mt. Satsuki offers a majestic and spiritual sight. You can experience a sensory-rich atmosphere filled with the rhythmic 'gangara' sounds of bells, which is the very origin of the festival's name.
The festival is held annually on August 24th. Since the date is fixed every year, it is easy to plan your visit for the end of summer.
The event takes place around Mt. Satsuki and various locations throughout Ikeda City.
To see the massive torches up close, we recommend viewing from around the City Hall or along the shopping street. For the best view of the 'Dai' character fire on the mountain, look up from the Ikeda Station area. The 'Kodomo-taimochi' (Children's Torches) carried by local children is also a vital and charming part of this traditional ritual.
