Fukushima Waraji Matsuri is a signature summer celebration in Fukushima City. Rooted in the historical winter ritual of the "Shinobu San Akari-mai," it evolved into a major summer event in 1970. The highlight is the sight of the massive "Waraji" (giant straw sandals) being carried through the streets. In 2019, the festival was revitalized through the production of musician Otomo Yoshihide, blending traditional flute and drum performances with a modern, high-energy style. Today, it is recognized as one of the six major festivals of the Tohoku region.
The most breathtaking moment is the appearance of the giant straw sandals. You can enjoy a diverse range of performances, from the traditional "Waraji Odori" folk dance to the modern, rap-infused "Dancing Soda Night." Another exciting event is the "Waraji Race," where participants—ranging from elementary students to adults—compete in a lively race while carrying or pulling the sandals. Whether you are drawn to the rhythmic music, the energetic dancing, or the deep-rooted traditions, the atmosphere is truly unique to Fukushima.
