The Dazaifu Tenmangu Shinkoshiki Daisai (popularly known as the 'Donkan Matsuri') is a highly significant autumn ritual held at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture. This tradition has been preserved without interruption for over a thousand years. It is held to honor the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, and to pray for regional peace and bountiful harvests.
The festival is affectionately called 'Donkan Matsuri' because of the rhythmic 'don-kan, don-kan' sounds of the drums and bells that lead the procession. Highlights & How to Enjoy
While many sacred rituals take place over the five-day period, there are three key highlights you should not miss:
*Oshimo-no-gi (September 22)**: A ritual where the deity moves from the main shrine to Enokisha Shrine. As the lights are extinguished for the 'Metsuto' signal, the procession moves through a profound silence and darkness, illuminated only by faint light, creating a truly mystical and awe-inspiring scene.
*Okamori-no-gi (September 23)**: The ritual of returning from Enokisha to the main shrine. Since this occurs during the day, you can enjoy the vibrant colors of the ceremonial costumes and beautiful flower floats under bright sunlight, feeling as if a Heian-era picture scroll has come to life.
*Sen-to-myo (September 25)**: The grand finale of the festival, where countless candles are lit around the Shinji Pond. The sight of thousands of flickering lights dancing on the water creates a serene and magical atmosphere to mark the end of the festivities.
