Chiryu Matsuri is a historic traditional festival centered around Chiryu Shrine in Chiryu City, Aichi Prefecture. With records dating back to the Edo period (1653), this festival is a cherished cultural treasure of the region. The main festival is held every other year, serving as a grand early-summer spectacle that beautifully blends magnificent floats with traditional performing arts.
The true highlight of this festival is the "Dashi Bunraku" and "Karakuri Ningyo Shibai" (mechanical puppet plays) performed atop the ornate floats. Watching the exquisitely crafted puppets move in perfect harmony with the music to tell a story is a masterclass in traditional Japanese artistry. The sight of these heavy, historic floats parading through the streets is truly awe-inspiring. Since the floats parade through the streets, you can enjoy the spectacle while moving along the route. The puppet performances on the floats are the absolute highlight, so we recommend finding a good vantage point along the parade route to experience the full impact of the performance.
As this is an outdoor event, please wear comfortable clothing suitable for walking. Since the schedule may shift due to weather or progress, please stay alert to the local atmosphere. Due to expected crowds, using public transportation is highly recommended.
