The Chinkasai Festival is a venerable ritual traditionally held at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. Since ancient times, it has been believed that during the flowering season, spirits of pestilence could spread with the falling blossoms. To prevent this, the 'Chinkasai' (Flower-Calming Festival) was established, a practice even documented in the Jingi-no-kanari orders of the Nara period. Today, it remains a vital ceremony to express reverence for nature and the changing seasons.
The centerpiece of this festival is the dedication of sacred Kagura (shinto theatrical dance), Gagaku (ancient court music), and Bugaku (dance). The ethereal sounds of traditional instruments resonate through the shrine grounds, blending perfectly with the spring air.
