Ogatsu Shinmei Matsuri is a traditional ritual held at the Shinmei-gu Shrine in Ogatsu, Yanai City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, to pray for good health, a bountiful harvest, and protection from misfortune. The ceremony features the 'Okoshitate,' where two massive sacred structures called 'Shinmei,' standing approximately 20 meters tall, are erected in the east and west. This unique festival combines the 'Shinmei Matsuri' and the 'Kobayakawa Clan Military God Festival' and was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 2009. Young men dressed in white-clad-garments perform solemn rituals to invoke the power of the gods.
The greatest highlight is the overwhelming scale of the sacred structures and the subsequent rituals. On the morning of the festival, during the 'Okoshitate' at Ogatsu Beach, you can feel the sacred moment of divine descent as the paper streamers flutter in the wind. At 8:00 PM, the climax occurs when the sacred structures are set ablaze by the representatives; watching the flaming structures tilt toward the shore is a truly breathtaking spectacle.

You can enjoy the energetic Shinmei Taiko drums, the Shinmei dance, and historical character dances featuring figures like the Shinsengumi or Yagyu Tajima-no-kami. Additionally, the 'Joge' dance, where men in loincloths parade through the streets with a unique rhythmic step, adds a vibrant energy to the event.

The event begins in the morning with the ritual of erecting the sacred structures and reaches its climax in the evening when they are set on fire.
