Event Overview

The Arimatsu Shibori Festival is a celebration of the 400-year-old 'Arimatsu Shibori' tie-dyeing tradition held in the Arimatsu district of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. This is a rare opportunity to witness the intricate art of tie-dyeing through exhibitions, sales, live demonstrations, and hands-on workshops.

The venue, the Arimatsu district, is a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The area is famous for its beautiful scenery of white-walled buildings and traditional wooden lattices, providing a stunning backdrop for the colorful tie-dyed products on display.

During the festival, numerous booths from long-established workshops and rising artists will line the streets. You can find a wide variety of items, from practical goods like handkerchiefs, scarves, and bags to high-end kimonos and interior decor. Artisan Demonstrations and Workshops

Watch skilled artisans perform the delicate technique of binding fabric to create patterns. A highlight of the festival is the hands-on dyeing workshop, where you can create your own patterned handkerchief or pouch. It is a wonderful way to feel the depth of Japanese craftsmanship firsthand.

Stroll Through a Historic Townscape

The streets, which retain the atmosphere of an Edo-period post town, offer photogenic views at every corner. We highly recommend wearing a Kimono or Yukata to complement the scenery of traditional shop curtains (noren) swaying in the breeze.

The event takes place throughout the historic streetscape along the old Tokaido road, surrounding the area near Arimatsu Station in Midori-ku, Nagoya.

The main venue is within walking distance of Arimatsu Station on the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line.

Avoiding Crowds

The area becomes quite crowded, especially around midday. To ensure you have enough time for workshops or a relaxed stroll, we recommend arriving in the early morning.

There are various cafes in renovated traditional houses and food stalls offering Nagoya specialties scattered around the venue. Use these spots to rest and enjoy the local atmosphere.

What to Bring & Etiquette

Clothing and Essentials

Since you will be walking through a historic district, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. If you plan to participate in a dyeing workshop, please wear clothes that you don't mind getting stained, or bring an apron.

Many food stalls and small shops primarily accept cash. Please carry small denominations of Japanese Yen for smooth transactions. For workshops, we recommend checking the official information in advance to see if pre-registration is required.
