Event Overview

Aoi Matsuri, formally known as Kamo Matsuri, is a sacred annual ritual held at Shimogamo Shrine (Kamo Mioya Jinja) and Kamigamo Shrine (Kamo Wakeikazuchi Jinja) in Kyoto. As one of Kyoto's three most significant festivals, it is a vital cultural event that preserves the aristocratic customs of the Heian period. The festival is named after the 'Aoi' (wild ginger) leaves used to decorate the participants, oxcarts, and horses.
