The Ako Gishi Festival is the most significant traditional event in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is held annually to commemorate the historic night of the Ako Gishi (the 47 Ronin) raid. Since its inception in 1903, this festival has a history spanning over a century, serving as a profound symbol of the local heritage and the spirit of loyalty.
The absolute highlight is the 'Chushingura Parade,' which transforms the entire town into a living scene from an Edo-period picture scroll. The spectacle begins with brass band performances, followed by intense 'Tate' (sword fighting) demonstrations, colorful processions of young women in traditional attire, and the grand 'Daimyo Procession' that recreates the stately marches of feudal lords. You will also see magnificent 'Dashi' (festival floats) depicting key scenes from the Chushingura story and the 'Gishi Procession' of the 47 samurai, which brings the legendary tale to life.
Additionally, the festivities begin a week early with 'Chushingura Week,' featuring various local events and limited-time promotions throughout the city. As night falls, the atmosphere becomes truly magical with lanterns and illuminations lighting up the streets, offering a nostalgic and historical ambiance.

The 'Chushingura Week' festivities begin one week prior to the main day, with various activities happening across the city. The evening festivities, including beautiful lantern displays around Oishi Shrine and Kaku-ji Temple, serve as a beautiful prelude to the main event.
The main festivities take place around the Ako Castle Ruins and the Oshiro-dori area (including Ikitsugi Hiroba).
The main events, such as the parade and the float processions, attract massive crowds along the streets. This is a premier opportunity to witness the history of the samurai up close. To fully enjoy the experience, don't forget to try local seasonal delicacies like 'Uchiri Soba' or warm 'Kasujiru' (traditional soup) often served during the festival to warm you up.
Since the festival takes place in mid-December, please prepare thoroughly for the cold weather. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for watching the parade.
