Akita Kanto Festival

Event Overview

The Akita Kanto Festival is one of the three major festivals of the Tohoku region, held annually in Akita City from August 3rd to August 6th. The 'Kanto' consists of bamboo poles decorated with numerous lanterns, designed to resemble ears of rice. Performers balance these heavy poles on their foreheads, waists, and shoulders—a traditional ritual to pray for a bountly harvest and good health. This spectacular display is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The main highlight is the 'Golden Rice Ears' floating in the night sky. Over 250 Kanto poles, adorned with vibrant, handcrafted lanterns, create a truly mystical atmosphere. You can witness the five fundamental techniques—'Nagashi', 'Hirate', 'Hitai', 'Kata', and 'Koshi'—which showcase incredible strength and balance. The 'Koshi' (waist) technique is particularly difficult and impressive. The rhythmic music (hayashi) and the energetic shouts of 'Dokkoisho!' heighten the excitement and create an electric atmosphere.

Schedule

The festival runs from August 3rd to August 6th. The main schedule is as follows:

• *August 3rd**: The festival begins with the 'Hohei Watashi' ceremony at Hachiman Akita Shrine in Senchu Park to pray for safety during the event.
• *August 4th–6th**: During the day, the 'Kanto Taigi-kai' (skill competition) takes place at venues like Area Naicaichi. At night, the main 'Yoru Kanto' (Night Kanto) event begins.
• *August 7th**: To conclude the festivities, representatives from each district perform the 'Hohei Nagashi' by floating streamers into the Asahi River.

Venue and Access

The main 'Yoru Kanto' event takes place on Kanto Odori (between Nichome Bridge and Sanno Koushi junction) in Akita City.

• *By Train**: Approximately a 10-minute walk from the West Exit of JR Akita Station (Akita Shinkansen). The venue and Area Naicaichi are within walking distance.
• *By Bus**: Take the limousine bus from Akita Airport and get off at Hokuto Bank-mae or Kotsu Sha-mae (approx. 50 minutes).
• *By Car**: Accessible via the Akita Expressway via Akita Minami IC or Akita Chuo IC. Please note that road-side restrictions and traffic control will be in place during the event.

Tips for Visitors

The 'Yoru Kanto' night event attracts massive crowds. To feel the power of the dancing Kanto up close, viewing from the roadside is best. After the third performance, there is a 'Fureai Kanto' session where visitors, including children, can try holding the Kanto or playing the drums. Don' much forget to join in the energetic shouts to fully immerse yourself in the festival spirit!

As this is an outdoor night event, we recommend bringing layers to adjust to the evening temperature and wearing comfortable walking shoes due to the heavy crowds.
