The Akagawa Fireworks Festival is a historic celebration held at the Akagawa River Green Space in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture. Established in 1991, it has evolved into a prestigious national competition for 'design fireworks,' showcasing a high level of technical skill and artistic expression. The venue, the Akagawa River Green Space, spans a massive 2km, providing a wide-open stage for truly dynamic and grand-scale displays.
The main attraction is the exquisite beauty of the 'design fireworks.' Unlike standard displays, these are meticulously choreographed with rich colors and intricate patterns. The vast 1,000m-wide space allows you to experience a massive canvas of light, offering a luxury viewing experience unique to this festival. The event is also well-known for modern touches, such as past collaborations with popular anime.
The event is held on July 1st. We recommend checking the official website closer to the date for specific launch times and the detailed program schedule.
The venue is the Akagawa River Green Space (near Taiji, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata). It is located approximately a 5-minute drive from JR Tsuruoka Station on the Uetsu Main Line.
To enjoy the powerful displays comfortably and up close, we recommend securing a reserved seat. Paid seating, such as the 'C Seat' (bench style), is often available through ticket agencies via lottery or general sale. As the event is expected to be crowded, early preparation is key.
Since viewing takes place along the riverbank, please dress appropriately for the terrain and prepare your belongings accordingly.
