The Bugaku Noh at Yasaka Shrine is a ritual dance offering held annually on November 3rd. The tradition dates back to 975 AD, originally established to pray for the recovery of Emperor In'yo. Although the ritual was once interrupted by history, it was restored by Emperor Komei and is currently performed by the Yasaka Gakukai.
Bugaku is a form of Gagaku (ancient Japanese court music) accompanied by dances such as Togaku or Komagaku. In this ceremony, the rhythmic sound of a large drum is set to the south side of the dance stage, creating a solemn atmosphere for the performance.
The main highlight is the authentic Bugaku performance by the Yasaka Gakukai. The ritual begins with the 'Furuboko' (purification dance) and concludes with 'Chokeishi' (musical performance only). The combination of the deep drum beats and the elegant dance movements creates a truly unique and spiritual space.
This is a rare opportunity to witness traditional Japanese music and dance forms—such as Seigaiha or Manzairaku—performed within the sacred grounds of a historic shrine.
