The Aoshima Sea Crossing Festival is a traditional ritual passed down through generations in the Aoshima area of Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture. The highlight is the 'Kaisyo-togyo' (Sea Procession), where young locals carry the sacred Mikoshi (palanquin) on a boat to circle the island.
This tradition began in 1948, born from the deep wishes of local fishermen to honor the deity and bring comfort to the sea. Leading the way is the 'Gozabune' (sacred boat) carrying the Mikoshi, followed by dozens of fishing boats decorated with colorful 'Tairyofata' (victory flags). This grand spectacle allows visitors to feel the intense energy of the ocean and the local community.
The greatest highlight is the 'Kaisyo-togyo'. Seeing countless fishing boats with vibrant flags marching across the blue sea is a truly powerful and dynamic sight. The sight of the Mikoshi dancing upon the waves creates a unique landscape found only in Aoshima.
