August Craft Event: Experience the Life of a Museum Curator!

Event Overview

Hosted at the Yokohama Doll Museum, the 'August Craft Event' is a special program where children can experience the professional role of a 'Curator.' Curators play a vital role in preserving, researching, and presenting important cultural assets. In this event, participants will learn about the behind-the-scenes work of a museum in a fun and engaging way.

The theme focuses on learning the origins of the 'Yokohama Opening Port Dolls,' which symbolize Yokohama's history. After understanding the historical background, participants will brainstorm and present ideas for dolls representing 'familiar people in modern society.' This process deepens their understanding of culture and history through more than just crafting—it encourages a perspective on how to preserve culture.

The biggest draw is the chance to experience a part of a museum professional's job firsthand. Moving beyond textbooks, the process of thinking about how to communicate culture through physical objects will greatly stimulate children's creativity. Participants will learn about the background of Yokohama's historical dolls and then design a doll that expresses 'modern everyday people.' This hands-on output fosters deeper learning and a new way of looking at museums.

Schedule

This event will be held on August 6, 2026. Participants must choose one of the following two sessions:

• *Date**: August 6, 2026 (Thursday)
• *Session 1**: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
• *Session 2**: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Venue and Access

The venue is the 4th-floor foyer of the Yokohama Doll Museum. The calm museum environment provides an ideal setting for focused learning.

Participation Details

This event is specifically designed for children in 4th to 6th grade living in or attending school in the city. It is an ideal level for understanding Japanese traditional doll culture and museum systems.

One guardian is allowed to accompany the child, but the guardian may only observe and cannot participate in the program. Infants and preschoolers may accompany the participant but must be supervised from the back to ensure the program proceeds smoothly without distraction.

Important Notes

Please check the following requirements before attending:

• *Clothing**: As this is a hands-on program, we recommend comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting slightly dirty.
• *Payment**: The program itself is free, but a separate museum admission fee is required. Admission is 200 JPY for elementary students and 400 JPY for high school students and above. Please prepare cash according to the facility's rules.
• *Language Support**: This event is conducted in Japanese. No English support or detailed instructions will be provided, so participation in an environment where Japanese can be understood is recommended.
• *Reservation**: Advance booking is required via the designated method. If the capacity is reached or if there are many applicants, a lottery system may be applied.
