Tenjin Matsuri is the annual festival of Osaka Tenmangu and is recognized as one of Japan's three most important festivals, alongside Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri. With over 1,000 years of history, it is a dynamic series of rituals truly worthy of the name 'Festival of Fire and Water.' The 2026 celebration is particularly rare, as the main event on July 25 falls on a 'Triple Auspicious Day' (Saturday, Taian, and Daimeitachi). It is a special two-day event attracting visitors from around the world.
The charm of Tenjin Matsuri lies in the grand processions held both on land and water.
On July 24 (Yoimiya), the 'Hokorona-gusa' ritual takes place, where white wooden floats are released into the Dojima River, creating a mystical atmosphere that signals the start of the festival.
The climax occurs on July 25 (Honkyoku) with the magnificent 'Funatogyo' (Boat Procession). Nearly 100 boats, illuminated by lanterns, glide along the Okawa River. The festival reaches its peak with a display of approximately 4,000 celebratory fireworks. The fusion of the illuminated boat procession and the fireworks over the water is a breathtaking spectacle.

Access: Closest stations are 'Osaka Tenmangu Station' (JR Osaka Loop Line) and 'Tenmabashi Station' (Keihan Railway). Due to heavy traffic, public transportation is strongly recommended.
Planning ahead is key. If you wish to view the fireworks up close on the 25th, consider booking paid spectator seats in advance, as it will be extremely crowded. Since 2026 is a particularly auspicious year, crowds will be even larger than usual. Research open areas along the river in advance to enjoy the view of the lantern-lit boats.
