Ao no Domon is a magnificent natural tunnel carved by nature, located in the Yabakei area of Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. Situated at the foot of the Kyoshuhō Peak overlooking the Yamaguni River, the structure has a total length of approximately 342 meters, with the tunnel section itself spanning about 144 meters. It is designated as a historical site in Oita Prefecture and is a vital scenic spot within the Yabakei-Hita Ebikusan Quasi-National Park. The area is also known for community efforts to enhance its beauty, such as the planting of Nemophila flowers.
The name "Ao" (Blue) is derived from the current district name. It was formerly known as "Hida no Kurinuki." The names "Hida no Tunnel" or "Ao no Domon" became established between the late Edo period and the Taisho era. In the 1906 guidebook "Yabakei Annai-ki," it was described as a "mountain shadow excavation or gate," highlighting its long history as a crucial transportation point and a place of beauty. The history of the site reflects the development of regional accessibility since the Taisho era.
The greatest feature is the unique shape of the gate formed by natural forces. The landscape is defined by the interplay between the flowing Yamaguni River and the steep rock walls. In spring, the area is adorned with blue Nemophila flowers, creating a harmonious view with the blue sky and river. In autumn, it becomes a popular destination for those wishing to see the vibrant colors of the changing leaves.

In spring, the blue Nemophila flowers are a highlight, while from early summer to summer, the clear Yamaguni River and lush greenery create a refreshing atmosphere. From October to November, the late autumn foliage provides a striking contrast against the rock faces.
