Uonuma Skyline is a scenic prefectural road (Niigata Prefectural Road 560, Tazawa Oguriyama Line) that traverses the ridge of a mountain range at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters, connecting Tokamachi City and Minamiuonuma City. The roughly 20km route from Tokamachi's Jūni Pass to Minamiuonuma's Haka Pass is a winding road that utilizes the natural terrain, making it a famous viewing road where you can overlook surrounding mountains and valleys. Numerous lookout points are strategically placed along the route, allowing travelers to experience the dramatic topography of the region through a car-based journey.
The planning for this road began around 1963 amidst a movement to develop tourism-oriented roads in the local municipalities. While originally envisioned as a much larger loop, the scale was adjusted due to construction costs and toll considerations. The approximately 18km section from Jūni Pass to Haka Pass opened as a free public road in 1979, and the route was officially elevated to a prefectural road in 1981. Although there were once plans for a toll road, it is currently operated as a free public road.
The route features five lookout points and parking areas that take advantage of the Uonuma hills' ridge line. The view near the Tokamachi Lookout, in particular, offers an unobstructed 360-degree panorama. From these vantage points, you can observe the basin towns along the Kan-etsu Expressway, such as Ishiuchi, Shiozawa, and Muikamachi, alongside vast, beautiful rice fields. In the distance, the majestic peaks of Mt. Hakkai and Mt. Echigo Komagatake stand prominently. These viewpoints provide a profound understanding of the local geography, where great rivers like the Shinano and Yano flow through mountains.
It is crucial to note that the Uonuma Skyline has a strictly defined operating period. The road is closed for the winter season from late November to late May. It is highly recommended to visit during the open season (primarily June to mid-November). Driving during daylight hours is ideal, as the bright sunlight makes the basin towns and distant mountain ranges clearly visible and easy to appreciate.
The primary activity is a scenic drive with stops at various lookout points to admire the landscape. You can park your car at the designated parking areas and step out to enjoy the view. Some sections of the route are also related to access for nearby ski resorts, such as Joetsu Kokusai International Ski Resort. Please note that the road is primarily intended for passenger vehicles; large vehicles like buses or heavy trucks are restricted due to the narrow sections.
The route passes through the borders of Tokamachi City and Minamiuonuma City. The surrounding area is home to various winter leisure facilities, including world-class ski resorts, and the fertile basin areas of the two cities. Before or after your drive, you can enjoy the scenery of the local towns and the thriving agricultural landscapes that define this region.
As this is a driving-based attraction, having your own vehicle is essential. Please be aware that parts of the road are narrow (some sections are only 1.5 lanes wide) and may not accommodate large vehicles. Always check the road status before traveling, as the route is completely closed during the winter months (late November to late May).
