Unsho-ji is a Buddhist temple located in Kitaura, Oga City, Akita Prefecture. Its most defining feature is the vast expanse of hydrangea clusters that blanket the temple grounds. From a single plant, the collection has grown to over 1,500 bushes, creating a breathtaking scene of vibrant blue that looks like a lush, colorful carpet spread across the earth. Beyond the flowers, the view of the Kitaura port town and the sea of Oga unfolds, offering a unique and unforgettable fusion of colorful flora and maritime scenery.
This magnificent hydrangea landscape has been carefully nurtured by the temple's deputy chief priest over many years. Through 15 years of dedicated cultivation, the number of hydrangeas has increased to over 1,500, with each plant producing an exceptionally high number of blooms to create a dense, striking visual impact. The temple serves as an important local cultural resource, offering a place where visitors can feel the profound serenity of nature and the changing seasons within a sacred space.
The most captivating sight is the dense cluster of hydrangeas blooming throughout the grounds. The emphasis on the specific 'blue' hue creates a powerful visual impact that is perfect for photography. Additionally, the backdrop of the Oga sea adds a layer of depth to the scenery. The striking contrast between the blue flowers and the blue sea continues to enchant and mesmerize visitors.
The best time to visit is from mid-June to early July, with the peak bloom typically occurring in late June. While daytime visits offer bright and clear views, we highly recommend visiting during the late afternoon. As the sun begins to set, the light hitting the hydrangeas creates a more mystical and ethereal atmosphere, offering a different kind of beauty than the bright daylight hours.

Since the hydrangea season coincides with the rainy season in Japan, we strongly recommend bringing rain gear (a folding umbrella or a raincoat). Additionally, please wear comfortable walking shoes for exploring the temple grounds.
The roads leading to Unsho-ji pass through the narrow streets of Kitaura. Please drive carefully as the roads become very narrow. During the peak season, the area becomes crowded with pedestrians. Access to the temple's internal parking lot is prohibited during certain periods; please use the designated temporary parking areas provided. Cooperation with local traffic rules is essential.
