Unryuin is a prestigious temple and a sub-temple of Sengaku-ji, serving as the 40th site of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Known as Rurizan, the temple holds a special and close relationship with the Japanese Imperial Family. The main hall, "Ryuge-den," is designated as an Important Cultural Property, and its magnificent architectural beauty, paired with the surrounding lush gardens, offers visitors a sense of deep tranquility and spiritual calm.
The history of Unryuin is remarkably ancient, founded in 1372 by Emperor Koko. Later, Emperor Enyu established the Ryuge-den and began the practice of sutra copying (Myoho Shakyo). Despite experiencing numerous fires and periods of war, the temple has been rebuilt and its traditions preserved to this day. As a highly prestigious temple frequently visited by successive Emperors, it maintains a profound connection to the Imperial House. The Reimei-den hall, which enshrines the tablets of past Emperors and members of the Imperial Family, serves as a testament to the historical weight and sanctity of this sacred space.
One of the greatest attractions is the "Ryuge-den," the main hall and an Important Cultural Property. Its solemn and majestic presence is truly awe-inspiring. The temple grounds are filled with historical vestiges, particularly the Reimei-den, a high-status space established through support from various sectors during the Meiji era. Furthermore, the design motifs throughout the grounds often feature the "Dragon" theme, allowing visitors to appreciate the intricate and artistic details woven into the architecture and landscape.
Unryuin reveals a different face with every season. In the spring, the temple often hosts special night-time illuminations. The sight of the temple grounds bathed in soft light, accompanied by the subtle fragrance of seasonal flowers, creates a mystical atmosphere quite different from the daytime experience. In winter, the garden transforms into a serene, silver-white world under the snow, offering a breathtakingly quiet landscape that is a highlight for many visitors.

Given the historical emphasis on the merit of sutra copying, the quiet environment provides a perfect setting for introspection and mindfulness. Unryuin is located within the grounds of Sennyu-ji Temple. The surrounding area is dotted with many other historic temples, making it an excellent route for those wishing to deepen their knowledge of Kyoto's history. It is easily accessible from the Tofuku-ji area, making it a perfect addition to any Kyoto sightseeing itinerary.
