Umoregino-ya is a designated Special Historic Site located in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. This site is renowned as the place where Ii Naosuke, who later served as the Great Elder (Tairo) of the Edo Shogunate and played a pivotal role in the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States, spent his youth. The site is a precious historical location that preserves the architectural styles and cultural essence of that era.
While Ii Naosuke eventually became the 13th Lord of the Hikone Domain, the period he spent at this residence was not without hardship. The name "Umoregi" (meaning a tree buried in the ground, invisible from the outside) symbolizes the circumstances he faced during his youth. However, the experiences gained here laid the foundation for his later political wisdom and his deep cultural refinement, including his mastery of the Way of Tea (Chanoyu).
The grounds feature several buildings that showcase traditional Japanese architectural styles. Visitors can directly observe the aesthetic harmony of white walls and dark timber, as well as the imposing wooden gates that reflect the dignity of the period. To enhance your visit, a multilingual audio guide (available in Japanese, English, and Chinese) can be accessed via your smartphone, providing deep context and support for a more meaningful exploration.
Umoregino-ya is characterized by its tranquil atmosphere that harmonizes perfectly with its surroundings. During the bright daylight hours, the contrast between the white walls and the wooden structures is particularly striking, offering a beautiful historical landscape. You can enjoy a peaceful moment of reflection alongside the changing natural scenery of the seasons.
Beyond simple sightseeing, you can engage in a deep learning experience by using the digital audio guide. By utilizing your smartphone, you can listen to explanations in English or Chinese, allowing you to immerse yourself in the daily lives and the historical journey of the figures who once lived here.
Umoregino-ya is located in the vicinity of Hikone Castle. It is a very convenient location, just a 3-minute walk from the Hikone Castle Nino-maru Parking Lot, making it an ideal stop during a sightseeing tour of the castle area.
