Tatsuki Park is a vast urban park spanning 48.9 hectares, located at the foot of Mount Tatsuki in Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture. It has been selected as one of the '100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan' and '100 Best Urban Parks in Japan,' making it a representative scenic spot in the San'in region. The park features a variety of attractions including beautiful ponds, observation decks, an animal plaza, and historic architectural structures, allowing visitors to experience both nature and history simultaneously.
The history of this park dates back to 1904 (Meiji 37). The development of the landscape began when the future Emperor Taisho, who was the Crown Prince at the time, visited the San'in region and stayed at the site. The park houses the 'Hiryokaku,' a building that preserves this history and is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Furthermore, the site holds significant connections to modern Japanese history, having been a location for an imperial visit by Emperor Showa in 1947.
The park offers diverse charms throughout the seasons. It is particularly famous in spring when approximately 4,000 cherry trees and 40,000 azalea bushes bloom, attracting many visitors. The 'Fureai Animal Plaza' (Animal Interaction Plaza) is another highlight, where people of all ages can enjoy interacting with animals. Other notable spots include the walking paths around the pond, the observation deck with panoramic views, and the historic architecture that adds a sense of timelessness to the landscape.
The best time to visit is during spring (around March to May) when the cherry blossoms and azaleas are at their peak. During this period, the park is transformed into a vibrant tapestry of colors and is very lively. You can enjoy different botanical expressions depending on the season. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully enjoy the scenery around the pond, the observation deck, and the animal plaza.
The main way to enjoy the park is through leisurely strolls across its expansive grounds. The animal plaza offers a wonderful experience for families with children or groups looking to interact with animals. It is also a perfect place to spend a relaxing time while admiring the historic buildings and the natural surroundings.
The area surrounding the park captures the historical essence of Kurayoshi City. The adjacent 'Tatsuki Tamagawa' area is a preserved group of important traditional buildings, making it a wonderful place for further exploration. The park also serves a central role in the local community, with the Kurayoshi City Hall located nearby.
