Uguisu Onsen is a tranquil hot spring area situated at the edge of the Shizukuishi Basin in Shizukuishi Town, Iwate Prefecture. According to legend, the area was discovered by farmers from the Kaga Province during the Tensho era, and its name is derived from the bush warbler (uguisu) that reportedly came to the riverbed to heal its wounds. The spring water is a rich sulfur spring with a source temperature ranging from 57°C to 62°C. Historically, it has served as a traditional 'toji' (healing bath) destination, offering a wide range of accommodations from large-scale hotels to traditional inns with self-catering facilities.
The history of this hot spring is deeply intertwined with the legend of the bush warbler. Historical records even mention that the 9th lord of the Morioka Clan, Toshio, frequently requested the local spring water to treat his ailments during the Edo period. In the early Showa era, it was a common sight to see people traveling from the surrounding Morioka area by horse during the winter off-season to seek healing. Since the 1950s, the area has undergone modern tourism development, balancing tradition with innovation, such as the creation of new industries using the thermal water. A notable modern aspect is the cultivation of 'Onsen Torafugu' (pufferfish) using the mineral-rich spring water, blending hot spring culture with local gastronomy.
The hot spring town unfolds along both sides of the Uguisu River, allowing visitors to enjoy a relaxing stroll while listening to the gentle sound of the water. In the center of the town, you can find public bathhouses accessible to locals and visitors alike, as well as the 'Uguisu Yu no Sato Park,' which features footbaths (ashiyu). The presence of pufferfish raised in thermal water is a unique cultural highlight found only here.
