Kozan Park (Tsuyama Castle Ruins) is a historic landmark located in Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture. The park is built upon the site of the former Tsuyama Castle, characterized by its impressive flatland castle structure with stone walls rising approximately 45 meters high. It is officially selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots and is considered one of the most beautiful locations for sakura in Western Japan. The park features about 1,000 cherry trees, making it a spectacular destination during the annual 'Tsuyama Sakura Festival' in spring. A key highlight is the 'Bitchu Yagura' turret, which was reconstructed to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the castle's construction, serving as a powerful symbol of the region's history.
Following the Abolition of Castles Ordinance during the Meiji era, the main castle tower of Tsuyama Castle was demolished in 1873. In 1900, the land was converted into public space and opened as Kozan Park. The current landscape of cherry blossoms was shaped by the contributions of returning soldiers from the Russo-Japanese War and local community members who donated saplings. In 1963, the site was officially designated as a National Historic Site under Japan's Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties. The park also houses several literary monuments and the 'Kozan-kan,' which holds historical significance as a former local school.
The park offers a variety of historical and natural attractions. A major highlight is the 'Bitchu Yagura' turret, reconstructed in 2005 to celebrate the castle's 400th anniversary; it is located south of the Honmaru Palace. Another must-see is the vast expanse of cherry blossoms in spring, which are beautifully illuminated at night. The continuous stone walls provide a sense of the original scale and grandeur of the castle fortifications. Additionally, visitors can find various monuments dedicated to literature, such as those for Matsuo Basho, and the 'Tsuyama Castle Site Monument' which tells the story of the castle's history.
Kozan Park offers different charms throughout the seasons. In Spring (early to mid-April), the 'Tsuyama Sakura Festival' brings the park to life with 1,000 cherry trees and stunning night-time illuminations. Early Summer (late April to early May) offers views of wisteria and azaleas. In Autumn (late October to mid-November), the 'Tsuyama Castle Momiji (Maple) Festival' allows visitors to enjoy the contrast between the colorful autumn leaves and the ancient stone walls. There are also special events held around the first sunrise of January. Depending on the season, the landscape changes from delicate blossoms to vibrant autumn colors.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through the historical architecture and natural landscapes. Walking around the reconstructed Bitchu Yagura provides a tangible connection to the structure of traditional Japanese castles. By visiting during seasonal events like the Sakura Festival or the Momiji Festival, you can experience local traditions and cultural celebrations. Exploring the area around the 'Kozan-kan' allows for a deeper understanding of the local educational and cultural history.
The area surrounding the park is rich in cultural facilities. The Tsuyama Folklore Museum, the Tsuyama Western Studies Museum, and the Tsuyama Nature Museum are excellent places to learn about the local history and natural environment. To the northwest, the Tsuyama Cultural Center serves as a hub for regional events. The area is also dotted with various shrines and temples, such as Tokumori Shrine and Kozan Hachiman-gu, creating a cohesive historical district.
