Doshun-ji Temple is a historic temple located in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It holds significant historical weight as the ancestral temple of the famous daimyo Mori Motonari and served as a historical setting related to the Meiji Restoration during the Bakumatsu period. The temple grounds house the Sanmon Gate and Kannon-do Hall, both designated as National Important Cultural Properties, which preserve traditional Japanese architectural styles to this day. Visitors can experience a profound sense of peace while facing these historic structures in a serene environment.
The history of Doshun-ji began in the spring of 1572 (Eikame 3) when it was founded within the castle of Yoshida in Aki Province. It was originally established as the ancestral temple for Mori Motonari. Later, the temple was moved to its current location in Yamaguchi City during the Bakumatsu period. Some of the buildings within the grounds are historical structures that were relocated from other sites, maintaining their integrity through various eras of relocation and repair. The temple also played a crucial role in local history, serving as a temporary residence for Mori Takachika and a site related to the Kiheitai militia during the turbulent end of the Edo period.
The most notable feature of Doshun-ji is its collection of National Important Cultural Properties. First, the Sanmon Gate standing at the entrance is a 'Shikaku-mon' style gate with supporting pillars at the front and back. While the roof was once made of fired tiles, it has been restored to a traditional 'Hiwadabuki' (cypress bark) style, offering a striking and unique aesthetic. Second, the Kannon-do Hall was originally a Buddhist hall from another location. It utilizes the 'Karayo' architectural style, characterized by an 'Ichi-ju Kasō-tsuki Irimoya-zukuri' structure. The decorative eaves on the lower part of the exterior are a rare architectural feature found in very few places in Japan. These structures are precious assets that convey the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional Japanese design.
Doshun-ji reveals different charms depending on the season. The best time to stroll through the quiet grounds is during the early morning or the calm afternoon hours. Visiting when the natural scenery displays deep, calm colors or during the lush green seasons allows visitors to enjoy the perfect harmony between the historic buildings and nature.
