Airiki Falls (Joseki Taki) is a magnificent waterfall with a total drop of 126 meters, located in Sakiki-cho, Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is an extremely precious site, being the only waterfall in Hiroshima Prefecture selected as one of the 'Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan.' The overwhelming scale of the falls never fails to captivate visitors. The most striking feature is the three-tiered structure, where the water flows in three distinct stages, each offering a different expression of beauty. It is one of the representative scenic spots in Hiroshima where you can truly feel the grandeur of nature.
This area has long been a place of reverence for nature. In the 'Geihan Tsushi,' a geographical record compiled by the Hiroshima Clan during the Edo period, the falls were described under the name 'Joseki-baku,' showing that people have known and admired this beautiful waterfall for centuries. Its beauty and the importance of its natural environment were officially recognized in 1960 when it was designated as a scenic spot of Hiroshima Prefecture. Furthermore, the surrounding area was designated as a Hiroshima Prefecture Natural Environment Conservation Area in 1975, ensuring that this precious ecosystem remains protected.
The greatest charm of Airiki Falls lies in its dynamic three-tiered water flow. The upper, middle, and lower sections each possess a unique rhythm and visual impact. The spectacle becomes even more powerful and intense after rainfall or during periods of high water levels, allowing visitors to feel the raw strength of nature. Additionally, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons; particularly during the autumn foliage season, the contrast between the vibrant colors of the leaves and the white cascading water creates a breathtaking view.
Airiki Falls offers different charms throughout the year. From spring to summer, you can enjoy the vivid greenery and the refreshing, cool air. In autumn, the changing colors of the trees provide a perfect backdrop for photography. For the best experience, visiting during bright daylight hours is recommended, as it allows you to clearly observe the details of the waterfall and the surrounding lush vegetation. However, since water volume varies by weather and season, it is wise to check local conditions before visiting.

Preparation is key when heading to the falls. Since the walk from the parking lot is about 500m and the terrain can be unstable, sturdy walking shoes (sneakers or trekking shoes) are essential. From an environmental conservation standpoint, please ensure you take all your trash home. Please also be aware of signs warning about snakes; watch your step and stay alert when walking near grass or bushes.
