Airyu Falls is a breathtaking waterfall located in Oizumi, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, within the Kawamata River Valley. Situated at an altitude of 1,250 meters, the falls are formed by groundwater from the southern foothills of the Yatsugatake mountains emerging through volcanic rock layers. The name 'Airyu' (meaning 'dragon spitting water') comes from the way the numerous fine streams of water emerge from the rock crevices, resembling a dragon breathing out water. The water remains pure and the flow is remarkably consistent throughout the year. The delicate scenery, created by countless thin streams dancing across the rocks, provides a striking contrast against the lush green moss and the clear river stream.
The waterfall was shaped by the natural flow of the Kawamata River. Its name is deeply rooted in the visual metaphor of a dragon breathing out water from the rocks. Since the late 20th century, it has been recognized as a representative natural landmark of the Kiyosato region. Notably, the falls gained wider recognition when they were featured in the opening scenes of the 2002 NHK Taiga Drama, "Toshiie to Matsu: Kaga Hyakumangoku Monogatari." Today, the area is well-maintained through conservation efforts and the development of walking paths, allowing visitors to experience untouched nature in a safe and preserved environment.
The most captivating sight is the delicate pattern of numerous thin streams of water cascading down the rock face. Near the base of the falls, the contrast between the dark, moss-covered rocks and the sparkling clear water creates a powerful visual impact. A well-maintained promenade follows the valley, allowing visitors to view the falls from multiple angles, including from the front and from slightly elevated positions. Surrounded by the forests of the southern Yatsugatake mountains, the area offers a deeply immersive experience where you can hear the singing of birds and the soothing sound of flowing water.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. The fresh greenery of May is breathtaking, and the period from late October to mid-November offers spectacular autumn foliage. During this time, the vibrant colors of the trees create a stunning backdrop for the waterfall. In the summer, the shade from the surrounding trees provides a refreshing and cool environment, making it an ideal destination for escaping the heat. In winter, the landscape may change with frost or snow. For the best photography, visiting during bright daylight hours is highly recommended.
Nearby attractions like 'Senmaibuchi' are scattered around the area, and you can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the Kawamata Higashisawa Valley Nature Trail. Accessing the falls is easy, involving a short 10 to 20-minute hike from the parking area along a well-maintained path, making it accessible for families and beginners. It is an ideal spot for nature photography or simply sitting by the river to listen to the calming sounds of the forest.
The falls are part of the scenic Kiyosato Plateau area at the foot of the Yatsugatake mountains. You can access the area via Kiyosato Station or Kai-Oizumi Station. The surrounding area is perfect for exploring the wider Kawamata River Valley through various nature trails.
As you will be walking on natural terrain, please wear comfortable, non-slip shoes (such as sneakers or hiking shoes). Be cautious of slippery surfaces during or after rain. While the area is free to enter, please check the status of nearby facilities for any specific rules. English signage may be limited, so it is helpful to have basic information ready. No reservations are required for visiting. For photography, please enjoy the scenery respectfully without disturbing the natural environment. Since the paths are natural, there may be uneven surfaces and steps.
