Tarumae Goro is a gorge located at the foot of Mount Tarumae in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido. It is officially designated as a nature conservation area. The most striking feature is the unique landscape created by the steep rock walls and the thick, deep green moss clinging to them. The moss covering the rock faces is so beautiful it is often described as a "velvet carpet," allowing visitors to feel the profound beauty of natural formations.
To protect its precious natural environment, this area was designated as a municipal nature conservation area in 1979. Over many years, this ecosystem and its breathtaking scenery have been carefully preserved, maintaining a place where the power and delicacy of nature coexist. The surrounding forests also serve as a habitat for various wild animals, making it a place where one truly feels the boundary between civilization and the wild.
The most spectacular view is looking down into the gorge from the bridge. The contrast between the steep cliffs and the light penetrating the deep riverbed creates a stunning visual experience. Especially in June, during the early summer season, the sunlight reaches the bottom of the river, making the water surface and the moss on the rocks glow brilliantly. This is considered the most beautiful moment of the year.
The best time to visit is from May to August when the fresh greenery is most vibrant. June is particularly recommended as the angle of light enhances the beauty of the landscape. Regarding the time of day, it is highly recommended to avoid entering the forest during early morning or late evening, as these are active times for wildlife such as brown bears. Visiting during the bright daylight hours ensures both safety and the clearest views.
Visitors can enjoy nature observation through the walking paths and the view from the bridge. Please note that while it was once possible to descend to the river, descending into the riverbed is now strictly prohibited due to the danger of rockfalls. From the bridge, you can enjoy a serene moment observing the approximately 6-meter high cliffs, the moss-covered rocks, and the clear stream below.
The surrounding area features several spots to enjoy beautiful natural landscapes. There are also routes through the nearby forests and other areas in Tomakomai that share this sense of natural conservation.
As this is a natural area, wearing comfortable walking shoes and practical clothing is highly recommended. Since this is a brown bear habitat, please remain vigilant.
