Takamori-dono no Sugi is a massive, historic cedar tree located in Takamori Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. This site is deeply connected to the history of Takamori Iyonomori Kori, the lord who ruled the Takamori area during the Sengoku (Warring States) period. The tree's towering presence, reaching straight toward the heavens, creates an overwhelming sense of existence, surrounded by a serene and quiet atmosphere that captivates all who visit.
The name "Takamori-dono" refers to the lord of the Takamori area, Takamori Iyonomori Kori. According to historical records, in the year 1586 (Tensho 14), following a fierce battle with the Shimazu army from Satsuma, the lord committed ritual suicide under this very tree alongside his retainer, Mimori Hyogo Yoshinari. This tragic event is the reason for the tree's name. The tree is estimated to be between 400 and 1,000 years old, suggesting it was already a magnificent specimen during that era. While it was once the burial site for the Iyonomori family, the graves were later moved. Today, a memorial tower for the retainer Mimori Hyogo remains enshrined beneath the tree.
