Sotobori Park is a unique green space spanning Chiyoda and Shinjuku Wards, developed along the former outer moats (Ushigome, Niimifune, and Ichigaya moats) of Edo Castle. The park features a long, slender shape stretching approximately 2km from the vicinity of JR Iidabashi Station to the south of Yotsuya Station. The preservation of the moats, which once served as critical defensive structures for Edo Castle, provides a rare glimpse into historical water defenses within a modern metropolis. Located amidst business districts and schools, the park serves as a vital sanctuary for tourists, local office workers, and students alike.
The foundation of this park lies in the historical "Sotobori" (Outer Moat) system of Edo Castle. By repurposing the moats that once protected the Shogun's seat of power, the park integrates ancient defensive architecture into modern urban planning. As part of the designated historical sites of the Edo Castle outer moat, the landscape retains the structural essence of the Edo period, allowing visitors to experience a seamless blend of historical heritage and contemporary city life.
The greatest appeal of Sotobori Park is the scenic promenade that follows the water's edge, offering ever-changing natural views. The cherry blossom season is particularly spectacular, with numerous trees lining the paths for a breathtaking stroll. Near Yotsuya Station, the "Sotobori Park General Ground" area features sports facilities such as baseball fields and tennis courts equipped with lighting for night use. Although the park is divided into several sections by the JR Chuo Line tracks, each area offers a distinct and enjoyable atmosphere.
The most significant seasonal transformation occurs from March to April during the cherry blossom season. During this time, the park becomes a major destination for hanami (flower viewing), with Chiyoda City even providing temporary waste disposal stations to accommodate the crowds. Daytime visits are ideal for enjoying the blossoms under natural sunlight, while the presence of lighting near the sports grounds allows for activity even in the evening. Regardless of the season, the park is a popular spot for midday strolls and breaks for local workers.
The park is primarily designed for walking and relaxation. Walking along the moat-side paths allows you to enjoy the tranquil waterfront scenery right in the heart of the city. For those interested in physical activity, the area near the General Ground offers space for baseball and tennis. Observing the daily rhythm of the city—where office workers and students take their breaks—is also a quintessential part of the experience here.
The park is conveniently located near major transit hubs including Iidabashi, Ichigaya, and Yotsuya Stations. From the Iidabashi area, the promenade continues along the embankments across the Chuo Line tracks. The surrounding neighborhood is a vibrant mix of high-rise office buildings and educational institutions, such as Hosei University, making the park a quintessential urban green space.
Comfortable walking shoes and attire are highly recommended for exploring the long paths. As this is a public space, please be mindful of your surroundings and ensure you take your trash with you. During the peak cherry blossom season, temporary trash stations may be available, but maintaining good manners is essential.
