Tomiya Park (also known as Sobetsu Park) is a beautiful park located on a high hill in Sobetsu Town, Hokkaido, offering a spectacular view of Lake Toya. The park covers a vast area of approximately 86,000 square meters, with about 20,000 square meters of its sloping terrain dedicated to roughly 300 Bungo plum trees. During the spring, the sight of pale pink plum blossoms and cherry blossoms blooming simultaneously creates a breathtaking tapestry of color, perfectly complementing the deep blue waters of Lake Toya and the surrounding mountains.
This area is characterized by a dynamic landscape shaped by volcanic activity. The vicinity of Sobetsu is rich in geosite features where one can feel the raw energy of nature. Tomiya Park has been developed as a place to appreciate seasonal flora within this unique natural environment. The blooming of the Bungo plum trees, in particular, is a symbolic event that marks the arrival of spring in the region.
The greatest highlight of the park is the plum grove spreading across the hillside. In spring, the approximately 300 Bungo plum trees produce delicate blossoms, and as cherry blossoms bloom at the same time, they create a stunning pink gradient across the landscape. From this elevated position, visitors can also enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Lake Toya and the surrounding mountain ranges. You can observe the changing expressions of nature from multiple angles throughout the seasons.
The best time to visit is spring, when the plum and cherry blossoms bloom together. The sight of the pink flowers covering the slopes is a unique spectacle of this season. While you can enjoy the vibrant colors under bright daylight, visiting during the late afternoon allows you to witness the beautiful color gradients of the sunset over Lake Toya. Please note that the park is closed for a maintenance period from November to mid-April.
The main activity is a leisurely stroll through the vast grounds. You can walk along the gentle slopes through the plum grove, immersing yourself in the scent of seasonal flowers and the sounds of nature. It is also an excellent spot for photography, capturing the panoramic view where the flowers and the lake meet. It is a perfect place to spend a relaxing time surrounded by nature.
The park is surrounded by many nature-rich spots near Lake Toya. It offers easy access to volcanic-related landmarks such as the base of Showa Shinzan and the Usuzan Ropeway, as well as the various Toya Lake Hot Spring resorts. You can easily plan a travel route that allows you to feel the dynamism of volcanic nature alongside your visit to the park.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your stroll, as the terrain includes several slopes that require careful footing. While entry to the park is free, it is helpful to have cash on hand if you use nearby facilities. Please be aware that English signage and staff support may be limited, so checking information in advance is advised. While photography of the scenery is freely allowed, please observe proper etiquette and respect the natural environment.
