Shiriya Misaki Lighthouse is a historic Western-style lighthouse located in Shiriya Misaki, Higashidori Village, Shimokita District, Aomori Prefecture. Completed in 1876 (Meiji 9), it is characterized by its impressive brick structure, standing 33 meters tall from the ground to the top. In 2022, it was officially designated as a National Important Cultural Property. A truly unique feature of this site is the presence of Kandachi horses—a local breed adapted to the harsh environment—grazing in the surrounding area, creating a breathtaking view of the lighthouse and horses together.
This lighthouse has played a vital role in supporting maritime safety in Japan since the early Meiji era. It is renowned as the tallest brick lighthouse in Japan, showcasing advanced masonry techniques of its time. It has also been selected as a Civil Engineering Heritage site by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, serving as a precious cultural asset that tells the story of Japan's modernization and technological progress. For many years, it has stood as a guardian of the sea routes at the eastern tip of the Shimokita Peninsula.
The greatest attraction is the historic brick exterior and internal structure. During guided tours, visitors can observe the heart of the lighthouse, including the light-reaching distance adjustment lenses and the arc lamp apparatus. Additionally, the surrounding grounds offer a peaceful view of the Kandichi horses grazing in a lush, natural environment. The technical prowess of the site is highlighted by its light intensity of 530,000 candelas and a visibility distance of approximately 34km, ensuring maritime safety for decades.
Lighthouse tours are typically conducted from mid-April to early November. Please note that the site is closed during the winter season (from early November to mid-April), so plan your visit accordingly. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons: from the vibrant greens and blue seas of spring and summer to the serene, quiet landscapes of autumn. Tours are often divided into morning and afternoon sessions, so it is recommended to check the schedule based on the day's weather.
