The Shiretoko Pass Observatory is a scenic lookout located at a pass with an altitude of 738 meters within the Shiretoko National Park in Hokkaido. It sits at the highest point of National Route 334, commonly known as the "Shiretoko Transversal Road," which connects Utoro Town in Shari and Rausu Town. From this vantage point, you can gaze directly at the majestic Mount Rausza, the centerpiece of the Shiretoko mountain range, while enjoying a sweeping panorama of the vast forest and ocean below. It is truly one of the most iconic scenic spots in Hokkaido.
This area is part of the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage site, a region preserved for its untouched and pristine natural environment. The Shiretoko Pass has historically served as a vital route traversing the Shiretoko Peninsula, long recognized as a place that embodies both the harshness and the sublime beauty of nature. The surrounding ecosystem is incredibly rich and is strictly protected under the National Park designation to preserve its unique biodiversity.
The greatest attraction is the overwhelming presence of Mount Rausu standing directly before you. The sharp, rugged silhouette of Mount Rausu changes its expression with the seasons and weather, constantly captivating visitors. From the observatory, you can also witness the deep green of the forest stretching out toward the horizon. In clear weather, the view is so vast and dynamic that you can almost feel the boundary where the sea meets the sky.
Please note that the Shiretoko Pass is closed during the winter months. Tourism is primarily recommended from May to October. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: you can enjoy the vibrant fresh greenery in spring/early summer or the brilliant colors of autumn. For the clearest views, visiting during the daytime when the sun is high allows you to see the intricate details of Mount Rausu and enjoy a crystal-clear panoramic view.
Most visitors stop here as a highlight during a scenic drive. The primary activity is simply taking in the grand scale of the landscape from the lookout. The observatory can be easily integrated into a larger travel itinerary that includes nearby spots like the Shiretoko Goko Lakes or the Shiretoko Nature Center. Additionally, the nearby Rausu Onsen area offers a perfect way to relax after exploring the natural wonders.
There are many spots nearby to fully experience the nature of Shiretoko. For instance, at the Shiretoko Goko Lakes, you can walk through primeval forests to enjoy the serene lake views. If you continue toward Rausu Town, you will find various hot spring (onsen) spots, such as Rausu Onsen and Rausu Geyser, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploration. You can also visit facilities like the Shiretoko Nature Center to learn more about the local ecosystem.
Because the observatory is at a high altitude, the temperature tends to be significantly lower than at sea level. It can also be quite windy, so we highly recommend bringing a warm jacket or an extra layer of clothing. While the parking area is free, please remember to take all your trash back with you to preserve the environment. While the facility itself is free, it is useful to have cash or an IC card handy for any nearby transportation or incidental expenses.
