Tamanoki Park (also known as Shirataki Park) is located in the Shirataki area of Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture. Spanning an area of 53,182 square meters, the park is a sanctuary of natural beauty featuring seven distinct waterfalls. It is famously celebrated in Japanese literature; the poet Ujo Noguchi once described the scene with the words, "Autumn in Shirataki, with maple leaves between the trees, spreading a brocade curtain over the mountains." This poetic legacy highlights the profound aesthetic and natural beauty found within the park.
The area has long been revered for its natural splendor. The cultural significance of the park is deeply tied to literary history, particularly through the works of Ujo Noguchi, such as "Shirataki Kuta." This connection between nature and literature creates a unique cultural landscape where visitors can experience the same scenery that inspired great poets.
The park features a total of seven waterfalls scattered throughout the terrain. One of the most notable sights is the "Meototaki" (Bride and Groom Waterfall), where the dramatic drop of the water and the surrounding topography create a mesmerizing spectacle. During the autumn season, the contrast between the white cascading water and the brilliant red and orange maple leaves creates a breathtaking visual experience that is highly photogenic.
The most highly recommended time to visit is from mid-November to late November, when the autumn foliage reaches its peak. During this period, the entire mountain appears draped in a colorful tapestry. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours to clearly see the movement of the waterfalls and the vivid colors of the leaves. The park is open daily from morning until 17:00.
The primary activity is hiking along the well-maintained walking paths. The trails are designed to allow visitors to immerse themselves in nature while observing the various waterfalls. There are benches and rest areas (gazebos) strategically placed along the paths, allowing you to take breaks and enjoy the scenery without rushing. Due to the changes in elevation, it is highly recommended to take frequent breaks.
Ozu City is often referred to as the "Little Kyoto of Iyo" due to its preserved historical streets and traditional atmosphere. The surrounding area features historical landmarks like Ozu Castle and the scenic views along the Hime River. A trip to Tamanoki Park can be easily combined with a tour of the historical and cultural sites in the Ozu region.
For a comfortable experience, wear sturdy walking shoes or hiking shoes, as the paths involve changes in elevation and uneven terrain.
