The most iconic symbol of the Shirakami Sanchi area is the "Mother Tree." This massive beech tree, estimated to be 400 years old, is characterized by its vast, sprawling branches and lush green foliage that can almost hide the sky above. Its overwhelming presence provides a sense of awe and can even offer a sense of healing and rejuvenation after a long hike. To protect the delicate natural environment while allowing visitors to enjoy the view, a wooden deck has been installed, making it easier and safer to experience the raw vitality of this ancient giant up close.
Shirakami Sanchi is a vast mountainous region spanning from southwestern Aomori Prefecture to northwestern Akita Prefecture. In 1993, it was registered as Japan's first UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The area surrounding the Mother Tree is part of a precious ecosystem featuring primeval beech forests that have remained largely untouched by human intervention. Historically, this region has been home to the "Matagi"—traditional hunters who lived in harmony with the abundant nature—shaping a unique culture. The Mother Tree stands as a living monument to the long history of this magnificent landscape.
The absolute highlight is the sight of the Mother Tree itself. Looking up from the wooden deck, the way the branches and leaves spread out above you is truly breathtaking. Furthermore, a short walk beyond the Mother Tree leads to an observation point where you can enjoy views of Mount Iwaki and Mount Odate. This is one of the premier photo spots in Shirakami Sanchi, allowing you to capture the majestic beech tree alongside the distant mountain ranges.
The Mother Tree displays a different, beautiful face throughout the four seasons. From spring to summer, you can enjoy a world of vibrant, lush greenery full of life. In autumn, the forest transforms into a colorful spectacle with the signature hues of the beech trees. Visiting during different seasons allows you to experience a unique natural drama each time. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours, which are most suitable for walking and sightseeing.
The course to the Mother Tree is a relatively short and easy walk of about 300 meters from Tsugaru Pass, making it an accessible way to connect with nature. Using the wooden deck, you can feel the vitality of the beech tree almost as if you were touching it. Walking through the forest while observing the small plants on the forest floor offers a perfect opportunity for "Shinrin-yoku" (forest bathing), a meditative experience that helps you forget the bustle of daily life. The surrounding area also offers spots where you can feel a deep sense of unity with the World Heritage landscape.
Various facilities serve as hubs for nature learning and tourism in the Shirakami Sanchi area. For example, at the "Shirakami Sanchi Visitor Center," you can learn about the seasons and the beech ecosystem through powerful visual presentations in a large theater hall. The surrounding area also features beautiful scenic spots like "Juniko" (Twelve Lakes) and various facilities for hands-on nature experiences, allowing you to fully enjoy the richness of the entire Shirakami Sanchi region.
