Shiofuri Pass is a mountain pass located at an altitude of 1,065m in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. This area is famous for a rare and mystical phenomenon called "Takigumo" (Waterfall Clouds), which occurs from late summer to around October. During this time, a sea of clouds gathers in the valleys and flows over the mountain ridges like a cascading waterfall. This breathtaking sight typically occurs during sunrise, creating a once-in-a-lifetime natural spectacle. Well-maintained viewing points are available near the parking area to allow visitors to observe this phenomenon safely.

Historical Background

The region has a rich history; it was once a vital route when the Takada Clan began silver mining in the area. The village of Sakamoto flourished as a post town during the 17th century when silver mining commenced in 1675. While the pass saw a decline in use after the silver mines closed, it remained important in the Meiji era for transporting forest resources and during the construction of the Okuadami Dam. Today, the area is cherished as a place to enjoy its profound natural beauty and historical landscape.

The absolute highlight is the "Takigumo" (Waterfall Clouds) that cascades down the peaks at sunrise. Watching the clouds flow like a massive waterfall is a unique experience found only here. From the viewing points near the parking lot, you can enjoy a clear view of this spectacle. Additionally, the "Old Shiofuri Pass (Silver Road)" was designated as a cultural asset in 2003 and is well-maintained as a scenic hiking trail.

Best Seasons & Timing

The Takigumo phenomenon is most frequent from late summer through October. To see it, you must arrive at the pass around sunrise. The peak observation period is from July to October. Please note that during the winter season (approximately December to May), the roads are subject to full closures due to heavy snowfall, so extreme caution and prior checking of road conditions are required.

Activities & Experiences

Beyond observing natural scenery, the area hosts an annual hill climb race in the summer. This race starts from Oyu Onsen at the foot of the mountain and ends at Shiofuri Pass, covering a total distance of 14km with an elevation gain of 750m. In the past, shuttle buses have even been operated to accommodate tourists wishing to observe the Takigumo phenomenon, highlighting the area's popularity for nature-based tourism.

Surrounding Area

The area serves as a gateway to various mountain trails, including those leading to Mt. Echigo Komagatake. At the foot of the mountain, you can enjoy relaxing at local hot spring facilities such as Oyu Onsen. The nearby Okuadami Silver Line is a major route, though please be aware that motorcycles and pedestrians are prohibited on this specific road.
