Jinpu Castle Ruins, located in Nirasaki City, Yamanashi Prefecture, is a significant historical site that showcases the advanced fortification techniques of the Takeda clan during the Sengoku (Warring States) period. Built in 1581 by Takeda Katsuyori, the name "Jinpu" means "New Fief," reflecting the ambition to establish a new political center. Today, it is recognized as a National Historic Site and is part of the "Selected 100 Famous Castles of Japan." The site is situated on a hilly landscape surrounded by lush greenery, offering an incredibly open and refreshing atmosphere with iconic views of Mt. Fuji and the Yatsugatake Mountains.
The construction of Jinpu Castle was part of Takeda Katsuyori's strategic plan to move his base from Kofu. The history of the castle is dramatic; in 1582, during the onslaught by the Oda and Tokugawa forces, the castle was burned by Katsuyori himself after only 68 days of occupation. Recent archaeological excavations have uncovered advanced defensive structures such as the Marumadashi (outer enclosure), Mikazuki-bori (crescent-shaped moat), and Dekamae (gate structures), proving its value as the pinnacle of Takeda-style fortification. In 1973, it was officially designated as a National Historic Site.
Visitors can explore various remains of the sophisticated defense systems, including moats and stone walls that allow one to visualize the intense battles of the past. Near the Honmaru (main enclosure) site, Fujitake Shrine stands as a spiritual landmark, adding a sense of historical depth to the visit. One of the greatest draws is the panoramic view from the heights, where the majestic silhouettes of Mt. Fuji and the Yatsugatake Mountains can be seen simultaneously. In spring, the surrounding area transforms into a beautiful landscape with blooming peach blossoms, known as the "Jinpu Togenkyo."
The site offers different charms depending on the season. The most spectacular time is spring (around April to May) when the surrounding peach blossoms are in full bloom, creating a stunning backdrop for the castle ruins. Early summer, with its deep greenery, is also a wonderful time to experience the harmony of nature and history. For the best views of Mt. Fuji, we recommend visiting on a clear day during daylight hours, as the mountain's silhouette is most distinct then. Please note that the area becomes very dark at night, so daytime exploration is highly recommended.
