Shibukawa City General Park is a vast recreational space covering 57.2 hectares, situated at an altitude of 600 meters in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture. Established in 1976, the park is characterized by its perfect harmony with the surrounding natural environment. From the observatory, you can witness the majestic presence of Mt. Akagi directly in front of you, while the distant Tanigawa mountain range stretches across the horizon. The contrast between the deep blue sky and the lush greenery provides a truly serene landscape.
This park was developed as a symbol of Shibukawa City's commitment to being a 'Healthy City.' Following the establishment of the athletics stadium in April 1976, various facilities such as baseball fields, gymnasiums, and tennis courts were added over the years. Notably, the park served as a venue for Judo during the Akagi National Sports Festival in 1983, highlighting its historical role as a hub for regional sports culture. Today, the park is managed through a designated administrator system to ensure high-quality maintenance.
The park is designed for both nature observation and leisurely strolls. A major draw for visitors is the seasonal flora; the sight of Yoshino cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant hydrangeas in early summer creates a stunning colorful landscape. The park also features areas with artistic sculptures and walking paths where you can listen to the songs of wild birds, blending art with the natural environment. The observatory area offers an unobstructed view of the entire Mt. Akagi range and the ridgeline of the Tanigawa mountains.
Visitors can experience vastly different landscapes depending on the season. In April, the park is bathed in soft pink hues as the cherry blossoms reach full bloom. During the hydrangea season, the lush greenery is complemented by vivid floral displays. While the observatory, paths, and plazas are accessible 24 hours a day, the view of the mountains and the changing light of the landscape can vary significantly depending on the time of day and season.
The park serves both athletic and recreational purposes. It features professional-grade facilities including the Mizuho Construction Stadium (athletics), baseball fields, and tennis courts. Additionally, the park hosts educational events such as outdoor observation sessions and bird-watching activities. For those looking to spend more time in nature, there are camping sites and BBQ areas (both covered and uncovered) available for a full outdoor experience.
The park is surrounded by the iconic natural landscapes of Gunma Prefecture, including Mt. Haruna and Mt. Akagi. Its location is also conveniently positioned for travelers visiting famous hot spring resorts like Ikaho Onsen, making it an ideal stop on a regional sightseeing route. The unique high-altitude environment (600m) influences the local vegetation and topography.
Due to the large size of the park, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please choose clothing appropriate for the current season and weather. Regarding payments, please carry cash if you intend to use paid facilities such as the camping or BBQ areas. Some facilities may have seasonal closing periods, so it is wise to check in advance.
