Senjojiki Cirque is a magnificent glacial cirque located at the foot of Mt. Hoken in the Central Alps (Kiso Mountains), spanning Komagane City and Miyada Village in Nagano Prefecture. From the Senjojiki Station at an altitude of 2,612m, a vast and dramatic glacial landscape unfolds before your eyes. The area is famous for its seasonal transformations: in summer, the landscape is adorned with colorful alpine flowers, while in autumn, the scenery turns into a breathtaking golden hue.
The terrain of Senjojiki Cirque was sculpted by glacial erosion, creating a classic mountain cirque. This region is a significant geological site, with other glacial features like the Nogaike Cirque nearby. Scientific studies, including Beryllium-10 (10Be) analysis, suggest that this unique landform was shaped during the last glacial period, making it a precious site for understanding geological history.
The greatest draw of Senjojiki Cirque is its abundance of alpine flora. During the summer, you can see dense clusters of plants such as Veratrum album (Japanese hellebore), Shinano Kinbai, Aleutian avens, and Lysimachia. The upper meadows are particularly striking with large colonies of Shinano Kinbai. Visitors can also enjoy a scenic walk along the well-maintained trails to admire the surrounding rock walls and the majestic silhouette of Mt. Hoken. A complete loop of the walking path takes approximately 45 minutes.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. Summer brings lush green meadows filled with blooming flowers, while autumn transforms the cirque into a sea of gold and red foliage. In winter (from December onwards), the area is covered in a pure white blanket of snow. However, please be aware that the terrain can be prone to avalanches during the winter season, so caution is advised.
Enjoy a relaxing stroll in an environment situated at 2,600m altitude. The area features facilities like "2612 Café & Restaurant," which offers large windows for viewing the Central Alps, and "SO・RA・TO・KI," a space with a terrace for relaxing amidst nature. In the spring (mid-April to late May), the area is also utilized as a ski resort with T-bar lift operations.
To reach Senjojiki Cirque, travelers typically take a bus from the Sugadaiai Bus Center followed by a ropeway. The surrounding area includes various lounges and facilities that offer panoramic views of the Southern Alps and Komagane City, serving as a perfect base for both mountaineers and sightseers.
As you will be at a high altitude, please wear sturdy walking shoes or trekking shoes. Temperatures drop significantly in the morning and evening, so it is highly recommended to bring warm, layered clothing. When taking photos, please step to the side of the path to avoid obstructing other visitors. If you plan on serious mountaineering, ensure you have proper climbing gear and have submitted a climbing plan.
