The Shoju Raiko Nerikuyo-eshi is a traditional Buddhist ritual held at Taima-dera Temple in Katsugi City, Nara Prefecture, to recreate the moment Princess Chujo ascended to the Pure Land. Locally, it has been affectionately known as 'Nerikuyo' or 'Oneri.' This event is more than just a performance of traditional arts; it is a deeply religious ceremony rooted in the legend of Princess Chujo. In 2024, its historical and cultural significance was officially recognized when it was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. A standout feature of this ceremony is the unique, slow-paced movement performed across the bridge within the temple grounds.
The origins of this ritual lie in the legend of the Taima Mandala and Princess Chujo. Princess Chujo is said to have attained enlightenment while still in her physical body, and the purpose of this ceremony is to recreate her journey toward the Western Pure Land. The tradition is believed to have begun around the mid-Heian period, maintaining a long-standing history in the Yamato region. Originally held on the 13th day of the 3rd month of the lunar calendar, it is now observed on April 14th according to the modern calendar. The complex history of Taima-dera, which blends elements of both Jodo and Koyasan Shingon sects, further enriches the cultural depth of this ritual.
The focal point of the ceremony is the ritual performed on the 'Raigo-bashi' (Welcoming Bridge), which connects the Main Hall (Mandala-do) and the Shaba-do. The sight of performers in magnificent, ornate costumes moving slowly across the bridge is a breathtaking and iconic scene. The sight of figures adorned in golden decorations and vibrant colors, proceeding through the sacred rites, evokes a profound sense of historical weight. The main ceremony takes place annually on April 14th, starting around 4:00 PM. Since it occurs during the spring, you can enjoy the ritual amidst the seasonal beauty of the landscape. As it begins in the late afternoon, the sunlight creates a unique, solemn atmosphere that enhances the spiritual-feeling of the event. Please note that road closures are implemented in the vicinity on this day, so please allow ample travel time.
