Sashiki Castle (Sashiki-jo) is a historical castle site located in Ashikita Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. Built on Mount Shiro at an altitude of 87.5m, this castle once played a vital role as a strategic point for both maritime and land-based transportation. Today, it is known as the 'Sashiki Castle Ruins' and is maintained as 'Shiroyama Park,' welcoming history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Its greatest charms are the magnificent view overlooking the Yatsushiro Sea (Ariake Sea) and the tranquil atmosphere surrounded by lush greenery.
This area has long been recognized as a crucial military and transport hub. Records show it served as a base for local powers during the Nanboku-cho period. It later became the stage for many historical events during the power struggles in Kyushu. Notably, it reached a significant phase in early modern castle architecture; during the era of Kato Kiyomasa, it served as a defensive stronghold against the Shimazu clan of Satsuma. Although its function as a castle was lost due to the 'One Castle per Province' edict in the early Edo period and subsequent political or natural reasons, its historical value remains highly regarded.
