Ryozan is a mountain with an altitude of 825m located in Date City, Fukushima Prefecture. It was selected as one of the "New Japan 100 Famous Mountains" in 2007, characterized by its compact yet rich concentration of natural beauty, history, and scenic viewpoints. The mountainside is adorned with unique rock formations such as kakougan (foliated rocks) and breccia, making it a renowned natural park with a rare landscape. Designated as a Fukushima Prefectural Natural Park in 1948, its relatively low altitude makes it an approachable destination for casual hiking and trekking.
Since ancient times, this mountain has been a site of spiritual worship, believed to be a place where deities descend. It is said that the Ryozan-ji Temple was founded during the Heian period by the Tendai Buddhist monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin. Historically, the mountain was a significant religious center; at its peak, numerous temples and halls lined the slopes, with legends mentioning as many as 3,600 monk residences at the foot of the mountain. Furthermore, during the Nanboku-cho period, the area served as a strategic military location. Today, the traces of this profound history harmonize beautifully with the surrounding natural landscape.
