Located in Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Rinzai-ji Temple is a historic training temple known as the ancestral temple of the Imagawa clan, a powerful Sengoku-period family. The most striking feature of this temple is its nature as a secluded place of spiritual training, which is usually closed to the public. The deep, tranquil spaces within the grounds are opened to the general public only twice a year on specific dates. This is a rare chance to witness the architectural heritage of Japan, including the main hall designated as a National Important Cultural Property and the scenic garden believed to have been constructed during the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Rinzai-ji was founded by Imagawa Nobuchika. Despite enduring the wars involving figures like Takeda Shingen and the rise of the Tokugawa clan, the temple has preserved its history through the centuries. It is particularly famous as the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu, during his time as a hostage, received the teachings of the eminent monk Taigen Sessai and devoted himself to study. As a site connected to many pivotal historical figures, it is an essential part of Shizuoka's historical narrative. It also served as the ancestral temple for the Imagawa clan.
The greatest attraction is the chance to see the architecture and gardens that are normally inaccessible. The main hall is a National Important Cultural Property, preserving the architectural styles of the early Edo period. Additionally, the garden, designated as a National Scenic Site, was designed during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The scenery of the architecture set against the meticulously designed garden offers a precious view that can only be experienced during these specific open days. Within the temple grounds, you can also find historical artifacts related to the Imagawa clan and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Rinzai-ji is not open to the public year-round. It is open only twice a year: May 19th (the death anniversary of Imagawa Yoshimoto) and October 15th (aligned with the Marishiten prayer festival). To truly experience the depths of the temple grounds, it is essential to plan your visit according to these specific dates. The typical visiting hours during these open periods are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The experience centers on appreciating historical architecture and gardens within the serene atmosphere of a training temple. On special viewing days, you can step into areas that are usually off-limits, walking through spaces that have been preserved for hundreds of years. Reflecting on the history of Tokugawa Ieyasu while gazing at the scenic garden provides a deeply spiritual and unique experience for every visitor.
The area around Rinzai-ji is dotted with spots that allow you to explore the history of Shizuoka. Nearby, you can visit the site of Sumpu Castle (Sumpu Castle Park) or Shizuoka Asama Shrine, which tells the local history. You can also enjoy shopping and dining in the nearby Sumpu Rakuichi area, making it easy to combine a historical exploration with local leisure.
As this is a prestigious training temple, respectful behavior is required. For clothing, please avoid overly revealing attire and opt for modest, calm clothing. Regarding payments, please note that cash is required for admission fees or donations. Please maintain silence within the temple grounds and respect the rules of the historical buildings and gardens.
