Onogawa Fudo Falls is a magnificent 25-meter drop waterfall located upstream of Lake Onogawa in Kitashiobaramura, Fukushima Prefecture. The site is named after the Fudo Myoo deity enshrined here, adding a layer of spiritual significance to its natural beauty. The water flowing through this area is supplied by the pristine waters of the Bandai Highlands, recognized as one of the '100 Best Waters of Japan' (Onogawa Spring Water). Visitors can enjoy a deep connection with nature while walking along a well-maintained path toward the falls.
The area possesses a unique historical charm, as the walking path was constructed along the former tracks of a forest trolley train. As you walk, you can observe the stone masonry remnants of old bridges, which serve as a testament to the industrial heritage of the region. Furthermore, the presence of the Fudo Myoo shrine makes this a place of traditional Japanese faith and spiritual retreat, blending natural splendor with cultural history.
The primary attraction is the sheer power of the 25-meter waterfall itself. The volume of water is particularly impressive from late April to early May due to the seasonal snowmelt. Another unique feature is the ability to witness the industrial remains of the forest trolley era, such as the stone structures, which provide a sense of history that is rare to find in such a natural setting. The surrounding environment is filled with the soothing sounds of flowing water and lush greenery.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring (late April to early May), the waterfall is at its most powerful due to the snowmelt. During summer, the deep green foliage provides a refreshing and cool atmosphere against the water spray. In autumn, the area is transformed by vibrant autumn colors. In winter, while the area can be used for snowshoe trekking, it is highly recommended to join a guided tour rather than exploring alone due to safety concerns.
The main activity is trekking along the Onogawa Fudo Falls exploration path, which is approximately 1 km long. The walk from the parking lot to the waterfall takes about 20 to 30 minutes one way. Please note that there is an elevation gain of about 70m, including several steep sections and stairs, making it a great way to enjoy a natural workout. The area is also used for seasonal activities like stream climbing in summer and snowshoeing in winter.
Located just upstream of the falls is Lake Onogawa. The surrounding area is part of the scenic Bandai Highland and Urabandai regions, making it a perfect destination for those who enjoy scenic drives and hiking through the mountains of Fukushima.
While the path is maintained, the terrain includes steep stairs and uneven natural surfaces, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. If visiting in winter, specialized gear like snowshoes is required.
